Danielle’s Picking Her Next Kayak…
Nov 8th, 2010 | By Dan (CSFW) | Category: Amusing, KayaksMy two year old daughter, Danielle, loves books. She can’t read yet but she loves looking at the pictures. When she finds a book she loves she’ll carry everywhere through the house. Last week it was “The Little Big Book for Moms.” Yesterday, it was “Kayaks of Greenland.” Why this book? My eldest daughter, Lena, will be turning five this winter. She’s outgrown the performance of her old “Sharkbait” Coos-8 kayak so I want to build her a new kayak. I’m going to give her the choice of three designs to pick from: a “modern” design based loosely on our new SEA-15, an Aleutian baidarka, and a classic Greenland kayak. So yesterday afternoon I dug out “Kayaks of Greenland” (KOG for short) and started flipping through it with Lena.
KOG’s full title is “Kayaks of Greenland: The History and Development of the Greenlandic
Hunting Kayak, 1600-2000.” It was written by Harvey Golden in 1999 and published in 2006. It’s 580 pages of “the construction, design, variation, and evolution of the Greenlandic hunting kayak.” There are 104 scale drawings of museum specimens dating from the early 1700′s through the 2oth century. It’s become the bible for people interested in Greenland-style kayaks. There are also hundreds of historical images and technical drawings. It’s available through Harvey’s website and through Amazon.
Lena really like the pictures of the seals. She really liked the “really smooth” kayaks… whatever that means.
Danielle joined us later and started helping us find Lena’s new boat. She seemed to like the KOG #82, the LC-148 specimen I based my CT-18 on. Perfect! So I put it away with the other boating books.
A half-hour later I come down stairs and see Danielle carrying KOG in a bearhug. She lifts it onto the kitchen table and “reads” it for a good half-hour. I guess she’s trying to figure out what HER next kayak will be. Go figure…

Too cool on these pics, Dan!
As you might guess, I tend to like your daughter’s choice of the Lc.148 too.
As to Danielle’s looking at Kog…I keep mine next to the bed for those nights I can’t sleep…I always learn something new every time I read it and it relaxes me enough to sleep!! (ps, don’t tell Harvey!!)
