Neytiri: Deck bonded to the hull

For a treat, here’s a picture of the “Neytiri” Night Heron with the deck internally bonded to the hull.  It’s now a kayak!  I’ll tape the outside seam tomorrow.

    Dan,

I’ve been following fascinated your build of the Night Heron, lots and lots of great ideas (and attention to detail !). I’ll be starting a S&G Night Heron very soon (kit just arrived last week – awaiting for heater to be added to the garage) and even though it’s not a hybrid, there’re many ideas that can apply (for instance, pre-gluing the bulkheads : in my Artic Tern, I installed the bulkheads after the hull and deck were joined, and it was a PITA!)

I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind:

1 – regarding the join between the hull and deck. It seems that you’re pre-gluing the tape to the seam in the hull and then lower the deck on top, correct (unlike Nick that rolls a wetted tape through the cockpit) ?
1.1 – In your case, is the tape already wetted with epoxy or just kept in place to hot glue ?
1.2 – If so, do you later on apply epoxy with a brush through the hatch openings ?
1.3 – how are you able to reach the ends portions of the kayak (bow, stern) through such a small opening ?
1.4 – in the picture taken from the inside, there seems to be some clear tape applied to the seams and on top of the fittings, what is that for ?

2 – the picture of the joined deck and hull is gorgeous ! The combination between black and wood is definitely striking. Based on this picture, I’m definitely thinking of doing black accents to my NH.
2.1 – I believe the bottom part of the hull is not carbon, but cannot remember if it’s either epoxy with graphite or black paint. Could you please indicate which one did you use and why ?
2.2 – Will you apply varnish on top of the paint/graphite and the carbon parts ?

Thanks in advance, and happy Thanksgivings !

    Happy TG, Hugo,

Hee hee… All good questions! Yeah, I thought there would be a few. I’ll answer them in blog posts over the next week or so. If I don’t just e-mail me.

I just weighed the kayak: 34 pounds!
Taping the outer joint, finishing and outfitting will add another pound or two. So we are on track for a 36 pound kayak. Sweet…
