I would work late into most nights and on the weekends. One day I came to the same realization as you and hung up that hat. The money was nice, but this family time is nicer. For me it is time for the second verse - grandchildren (four of them now) demanding time and attention (and small kayaks!). But in between there, for a decade or so, there were times and opportunities for going berserk with work or whatever kind of self-fulfilment you might fancy...
