2009 “Elsie” CT-18
“Elsie” was built in the winter of 2009 for a CT customer. It is the prototype of our East Greenland kayak called the Connecticut-18 which is modeled on the Danish National Museum specimen #LC-148. It has a real unique hybrid construction: the hull is cedar-stripped while the deck is framed and skinned like a SOF. It combines the modern performance of a rigid hull with the look and feel of a traditional skin-on-frame. The method also provides the option of having water-tight bulkheads; something very difficult to have on a SOF. It’s a very light construction method also.
The modifications: length reduced 4″ to 18′, beam increased 3/8″ to 21″, waterline lengthened 4″, cockpit moved aft 2″, rocker reduced 30%, foredeck height reduced 1/2″ to 8-1/4″, aft deck height reduced 2-3/8″ to 5-1/4″.
Two water-tight bulkheads, cedar stripped hull, nylon-reinforced vinyl deck, rigging is antler on black cord.
This beautiful kayak is lightweight, extremely easy to balance brace and is a great kayak for learning all the Greenland rolls. It will work for anyone with a maximum body weight of 190#.
The kayak was seen at the weekend at Delmarva in 2009. Photos taken in the water at Walden Pond may be viewed at the Walden Qajaq Society.
