Black Pearl: Glassing the Deck
Dec 11th, 2006 | By Dan (CSFW) | Category: 06.11 Black Pearl (CT)Any stubble from the seal coat and filling cracks was scraped off with a sharp cabinet scraper. The glass was then laid on and cut to fit. To save further weight, 3 oz 4HS satin weave E cloth was used for the deck. This was beautiful stuff to work with. It felt like a soft cotton t-shirt. It cur beautifully. I didn’t like laying flat around the curves of the coaming. As much as I didn’t want to I had to cut the cloth and put in a splice in the middle of the cockpit. It should sand out fine. Due to the tight weave I knew wetting out would be harder so I before glassing yesterday I heated up to over 80 deg F (26 deg C). It wetted out like wonderfully. I have never had glass wet out so easily. Felt nice… If any one is interested what a WHITE Pearl would look like, see below!
Next will be sanding and glassing the inside of the hull with 4 oz S-2 cloth.

Anyone interested in what an even whiter Pearl would look like can have a look at this pic (http://www.thomassondesign.com/img/blackpearlfoto10.jpg).
In the local kayak club these two are sometimes known as Mother-of-pearl and Father-of-pearl…
